At the Open Forum on Transport which the Society organised in November 2009, the SCC spokesman identified the main topics which would be addressed for projects to be developed under the heading of Transport for Guildford (TfG) for which £30 million has been reserved.  Amongst these were the need for a Transport Interchange at the Railway Station and improvements to the Gyratory System.

We prepared this presentation for the Steering Group to suggest ideas for meeting these objectives. See slides by clicking here (Adobe Reader will need to be installed)

  • A scheme to improve access for buses to the railway station forecourt is proposed to create an effective transport interchange, independent of any station re-development. The Group used traffic origin and destination spreadsheets provided by SCC in 2007 to confirm the existence of observed congestion in the vicinity of Farnham Road, the Railway Station and the Gyratory system.
  • Two alternatives aim to reduce the volume of traffic along Bridge Street so that it could be reduced to two lanes to allow for the widening of pedestrian walkways and/or the introduction of cycle lanes.
  • Finally, an idea which the Group has been considering for many years and supported by the traffic flow data, is a proposal for a new road bridge across the railway, north of the station, to reduce current congestion at the mini-roundabout on Farnham Road and to improve links with West Guildford.

Clearly such a bridge project would be beyond the scope of TfG but the Group considers that an evaluation should be included in the current modelling studies with a view to inserting the concept into longer term planning in order to secure the necessary space.
