The Rise of Car Dependency in England’s New Home

23 January 2025

Recent Report October 2024

A report published by the New Economic Foundation, sponsored by Go Ahead a Transport Group, has identified England's recent housing developments have increasingly promoted car-dependent lifestyles. Without substantial changes, car dependency might persist for decades. The report overviews thet three key factors driving this trend:

Location of New Homes

  • Preference for cheaper greenfield land
  • Less opposition in remote areas
  • Lack of integrated transport and housing planning
  • Top-down local housing targets

Provision of Public Transport and Active Travel

  • Insufficient funds for public transport
  • Prioritization of road infrastructure
  • Poor public transport and active travel in adjacent areas

Design of New Places

  • Estate layouts favor cars
  • Car-centric local amenities
  • Parking policies encourage car travel

To combat rising car dependency, it is proposed to integrate regional planning, sustainable transport standards, and enhance public transport funding.

The aim should be for sustainable development and better living spaces for all.
