Transport for London operate as at March 2024 operated 8,776 Buses, of which 1,397 were Electric buses, and 3,826 Hybrid buses. TFL is increasing its electric bus fleet with the aim to have an emissions-free bus network by 2030.
Firstly the single deck buses adopt a new sleaker design language with enclosed front and rear wheel, and sides which have extensive glazing. The vehicles also feature new more comfortable seat designs, grippier floor surfaces to reduce accidents, and USB Sockets.
Secondly, building on experience from Europe, they ‘opportunity charge’ during the day by using a pantograph to top-up the batteries at the end of the route. This procedure allows the batteries to be kept up to a good level of charge in as little as six minutes. The new buses are assigned to one of the longest routes in the Capital (route 358) at 15 miles.
This ‘opportunity charging’ during the day allows buses avoids returning to the garage for a lengthy charge so allowing the route to be served with fewer buses. Overnight buses are fully charges at the depot.
Charging is very simple for the driver and can be accomplished without the need to move from their cab, the pantograph connects at the push of a button.
Initially 20 of the buses, manufactured by Spanish company Irizar have entered service. Initially, they will run along route 358 — one of TfL's longest — between Crystal Palace and Orpington. If it proves a success pantograph system may be rolled out to other routes.
TFL have another route that has a Pantograph charger facility at one of its garages, in this case charging the double decker electric buses.
The central bus station is getting an extensive rebuild shortly, has any provision been made to allow for 'opportunity charging in the future'?
