London Seeks to increase housing standards

13 December 2023

Space in new buildings.

The UK has a set of minimum space standards for buildings describing the spce required for various building types.

In June 2023, the Mayor of London published Housing Design Standards, a London Plan Guidance document. This includes a table for best practice space standards.

The best practice standards don't replace the national standards; they are what the Greater London Authority would like developers in London to achieve. The improvements are aimed to improve provision of more storage space and also to aid better working-from-home space.

The best practice standards are about 10% plus compared to national standards. London is also encouraging larger balconies for flats and the provisoin of dual aspects for properties where possible.  The Right Hand Column (Numbers in Italics) in each category shows the proposed figure compares to the National Stadard.
