Not the most obvious area for innovation but the recent 400 plus car park at National Grid’s HQ, on the outskirts of Warwick is a bit different. The car park is on a sensitive site with the view of the Historic Castle and is operational 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
The new car park is a 446 space split level, prefabricated steel framed car park so very normal. The big difference is that in part it is covered by a living wall of 1027 sq.m, which is Europe’s largest. The wall provides space for nearly 100,000 plants from 20 different species. The wall also houses Bird and Insect Boxes.
The result is a car park that is less obtrusive, has good natural ventilation, and at night limits light emissions. The car park took 6 weeks to erect.
The project was devised by a Haslemere based firm of architects One World Design Architects
