Small, Expensive, Outdated Housing

UK Housing Stock is below international equivalents

The Resolution Foundation has published its first Housing Outlook for 2024.

The report highlights that Britain’s housing offers the worst value for money of any advanced economy, combining high prices with old, cramped, poorly insulated buildings and long commutes.

The report notes that households in England had on average 38 square metres of floorspace per person.  This compares with France at 43 square metres and German at 46 square metres; even Japan has a 40 square metres per person.

The UK’s housing stock is easily the oldest compared to the EU, with almost four in ten homes built before 1946, compared with three in ten in France, one in four in Germany and one in ten in Finland — with knock-on effects for energy efficiency.

Compared with European peers: in 2019, more than 43 per cent of commuters in the UK spent at least an hour or more a day traveling to and from work, 14 per cent spending more than two hours, compared to an EU average of 37 per cent and 9 per cent respectively

The full report can be found below.

National Politics

It will be interesting what plans for housing the major parties propose in their upcoming manifestos’.  Both Conservatives and Labour appear to be considering yet more changes to the Planning System which they believe is holding back development – how this combined with increasing the quality of building is not clear.
