Local Government Re-organisation

31 March 2025

Update on Progress

Proposals for re-organinsing Surrey into 2 or 3 unitatires authorities was duly submitted on the 23rd March with a final version to be submitted by the 7th May.

The debate has caused a split between Surrey County Council which favours a 2 Unitary Authority solution, and the 11 District/Borough Councils that favour a 3 Unitary Structure.

Eight of the District Councils including GBC have now started a consultation with residents to gather views. Surrey Councty Council maintain that there is no requirement for councils to undertake a resident consultation as part of the local government review process. It is understood that the government does intend to run a consultation with stakeholders over the summer.  Stakeholders not include residents!!

You can read the arguments as presented in reports at the link document below.
