Leatherhead has been conducting a masterplanning exercise, which has been on-going since 2016, for its town centre similar to the ‘Shaping Guildford’s Future’ which is currently underway.
Leatherhead have developed a vison for their town to be - "A friendly, vibrant and lively modern market town where people of all ages can shop, eat, relax and have fun by the riverside.
This includes:
Continuing to celebrate the town’s character, history and environmental setting and complement this by new and revitalised uses.
High quality, people-friendly streets and spaces will combine to link the riverside, railway station, business and residential areas with the heart of the town centre. The town centre will be highly accessible by all forms of transport.
A wider range of shops, new housing, and leisure and community facilities will make Leatherhead a better place to live, work and visit.
The plan also includes green space beside the River Mole.
Mole Valley District Council has an agreement with Kier Property to be its joint venture partner to lead the £350m regeneration scheme.
The partners aim to redevelop the Bull Hill and Swan Centre sites with residential, commercial and retail infrastructure across an 8-10 year programme of development.
Full details of the plans in Leatherhead can be found on the Transform Leatherhead website
We look forward to ‘Shaping Guildford’s Future’ coming forward with proposals and options for Guildford Town Centre. With several major sites in the town centre being proposed for development we urgently need a plan for the town that avoids the centre being a series of disparate sites, supported by inadaquate or failing facilities and infrastructure.
Help us make Guildford better
We want our town to be vibrant, attractive and liveable. We support development that brings a sense of place and enhances the best aspects of our town. If such aims can be embraced, we believe Guildford has the chance to lead the way in enabling sensitive and sustainable development.
Pressures for development are increasing. Planning rules are being eased. The Society’s commitment to standing up for Guildford is needed more than ever.
