Dezeen the online architectural design magazine has a series of articles on the the Timber Revolution in building technology. The latest in the series examines the Tamedia Office Building in Zurich by Shigeru Ban which is Switzerland's first seven-storey mass-timber structure that was completed 10 years ago.
Tamedia are a Swiss publishing group and the building is an extension of the company’s existing headquarters and is situated on a prominent site on the banks of the river Sihl . The building is a timber frame covered by a glass skin that allows the timber frame to be clearly seen.
The prefabricated frame is made of 2,000 cubic metres of glued-laminated timber, held together entirely without screws or nails using a novel structural system developed by Japanese architect Ban in collaboration with Swiss engineer Hermann Blumer.
